Shopping Trends of the 2020 Holiday Season

Shopping Trends of the 2020 Holiday Season

What eCommerce and online shopping trends have we seen this 2020 holiday season?

2020 has been a rollercoaster, but we’ve seen some predictable occurrences happen around the busiest shopping season. While some shopping trends are repeating themselves from last year, we have a lot to learn from 2020 in how we may move forward.

Growth YOY in November

Despite financial hardships that came this year, we saw a lot of people come out to shop.

In November, consumer spending through online channels grew 31.3% over November 2019, according to a Digital Commerce 360 analysis of the Commerce Department’s advance monthly figures.

Drawn Out Sales

This year, we saw a lot of retailers have sales for more than just post-Turkey day. A lot of retailers did week or even month long sales in order to entice customers to shop while attempting to do it safely.

Cyber Monday vs. Black Friday

Everyone was interested to see how BFCM would play out this year, with most people and businesses shopping virtually. BigCommerce reported that we saw that Cyber Monday lead in GMV and AOV, while Black Friday still had the highest order volume.

Smartphone Use Growing

Despite the fact that a lot of people are spending time at home, we still saw that smartphone use continued to grow in overall device share. While desktop still holds a majority of orders, smartphones accounted for nearly 43% of all orders.

December Shopping Growth Continues

Digital360 reported that between December 1st and 9th, digital spending increased 48.8% YOY according to Adobe data. This was seen to be done so that shoppers can take advantage of free shipping promotions, as well as avoid potential late shipments that have been occurring this year due to a higher volume of shipping.

Supporting Small

With a number of small businesses facing difficulty this year, there was an overwhelming amount of support for small businesses coming from shoppers this year, with Fundera reporting that shoppers spent $12.9 billion on Small Business Saturday. We hope this growth continues and shoppers are able to support local businesses throughout and after the holiday season.

What does this mean for your business?

With the continued growth of shopping online, we’re expecting that it’ll soon become a necessity for businesses to have an online presence or eCommerce store. Whether it’s ordering online and picking up in-store or bolstering your social media presence, it’s important to consider how you too can be online. Along with that, having a mobile-friendly site is important. Whether users are simply browsing or making a purchase online, it’s important that they’re able to find what they need on your website from whatever device they may be on.

Along with that, we’re seeing a renewed interest and enthusiasm for small businesses that we hope will continue to grow. As some businesses have continued to see growth this year, we hope that consumers will continue to turn to small businesses that need them most.
